All About Our Own Dogs

We are the very proud 'parents'

to three beautiful girls, Rika, Megan and Kia.

We thought you may be interested to read about them.

Rika

Rika on Bude beach

Rika is 8 years old, she will be 9 in March. She is a very gentle dog who loves everybody, especially if they have gravy bones in their pockets!

We bought Rika from a lady in Somerset after I lost my first German Shepherd Dog, 'Kayleigh'.

Rika was 6 months old and had lived in a kennel for all that time.

We now know that nobody else wanted her because of her dreadful hips.

Rika has very bad hip dysplasia and is now on permanent pain relief. She can only have limited exercise, but being so intelligent, she always lets me knowwhen she has had enough.

Megan

Megan, Me & Holly

Megan is 4 years old and Mummy's baby!

We decided to get a companion for Rika, and found out about Megan whilst we were on holiday in Wales.

She was going to be Tim's birthday present. There were 6 puppies to choose from, who were all gorgeous, but there was something about Megan that stood out straight away. It took 4 hours of playing with them all to convince Tim that Megan was the one that he wanted, but thats another story!! Needless to say Megan and I are joined at the hip, and although she loves Tim and the children she is my constant shadow who I would be lost without.

Unfortunately when Megan was 2 she had a fit, it was the most awful experience for her and me. She didn't have another one for 11 months, then 5 months. She has had 3 this year and has now been diagnosed as being epileptic.

Megan is the sweetest, most loving little dog  and although epilepsy is awful we all cope and our lives have been enriched by Megan's eagerness for life.

Kia

Kia is 8 months old, she will be 1 in March.

We received a phone call on the 25th October to ask if there was any chance of us taking on another dog. This was probably the last thing on our minds but after hearing the story we thought we could at least act as foster carers until a permanent home could be found.

Kia was kept in a stable yard with 2 others. She had been bought to use for breeding purposes but the couple who owned her had split up leaving Kia behind.

All three dogs had been fed out of one bowl, resulting in fighting at mealtimes. Also, Kia had been eating the lions share which meant that she was extremely overweight compared to the other 2.

We took Kia out with Rika and Megan and they all got on really well. She soon settled down indoors and quickly realised that she didn't need to wolf her food down, the others would never dream of eating each others!

Kia was lame the day we picked her up, although nobody had seen her lame before?! We gave her a few days to settle then took her to the local vets to be weighed and wormed. Jackie the vet looked at her leg and booked her in for x-rays the following week.

The results were not good, Kia has OCD which is probably the result of overfeeding which has forced her to grow to heavy for her still soft bones.

Kia is going to Bristol veterinary hospital to have an operation to correct this on the 11th of December. We can pick her up on the 13th and hopefully she will then be able to lead a normal life .

Kia has settled in so well that there is no chance of her going anywhere else! Even though she is lame, Megan and her run and play all around the fields and are a joy to watch. Rika likes to keep an eye on them and tell them off if they become too boisterous!

We will let you know how the operation goes.
