Ever since I can remember I have been obsessed with dogs, no particular breed, just any dog. Eventually when I was 9 years old my parents caved into the pressure and Susie a beautiful Golden Retriever came into my life. When I was 18 I was offered a job looking after racehorses that came home for a rest between training seasons. It was then that Kayleigh my first German Shepherd came to live with us. Kayleigh and Susie became great friends and would come to work with me everyday. My parents have gone on to have two more wonderful Golden Retrievers, Kiri and Amber and we now have four German Shepherds, Rika who came along after Kayleigh left us, Megan who came to be Rika's best friend, Kia and Gypsy who needed new homes since we moved here in 2006. We were living in Winchester when we decided to build a hotel for dogs. We had been horrified and appalled by the boarding kennels that we had visited, perhaps we were unlucky with the ones we looked at, but after viewing over 50 kennels in 4 counties (yes, we did become a tad obsessed!) we came to the conclusion that our very precious dogs deserved better. They were used to long off lead walks and a comfortable bed, not being forced to toilet on concrete and the plastic bed with newspaper that we saw on many occasions. We moved to the borders of North Devon and Cornwall as the area is so beautiful and very dog friendly. Most of the local beaches are dog friendly and the walks are stunning. As the crow flies we are very close to the sea (although we cannot see it from the house). We started to build the hotel in July 2006 and eventually opened in April 2007. The whole building was designed around exactly what we would want for our dogs, from the beds in the bedrooms for Megan who always shares our bed to the hydrotherapy pool for Rika who loved to swim and we just hoped that there were other people who felt the same about their dogs too. holiday accomodation close by; This is something completely different and it looks fantastic. It is situated just up the road from us in Bideford. Personally, I would love to stay here Rufus Stone Another wonderful and fully recommended B&B is' Southdown' . It is run by a lovely lady called Mary who will welcome both you and your dog, so if you fancy coming down to see us and want to stay overnight this is somewhere where you will be guaranteed a warm welcome in her charming 17th century cottage. Please note - not all Poodle crosses are non moulting, but they are all fun!
